This year, 2018, will be the 111th Summer Flower Show since the Society began in 1891, and the Show will be on July 21st. It is a traditional flower show staged in July in a large marquee, with around 120 classes covering flowers, fruit and vegetables, floral arrangements, handicrafts, home produce and junior classes for younger members.
The Society is affiliated to the Royal Horticultural Society, and judging follows the rules and standards set out in the RHS Handbook. The judges are all well-respected and, for horticultural classes, are recognised by the RHS. The awards for the classes are generously sponsored by local businesses and individuals, and there are many cups and trophies which have been donated over the years for specific classes or combinations of points. Comprehensive rules and advice for showing are to be found in the Summer Schedule. Entries are not restricted to Society members, but some classes have a geographical restriction of being within a four mile radius of Leigh Church.
Planning for the show begins in the previous Autumn, and involves the help support of a large number of members of the Society and the village. The Summer Show is still a very traditional affair, which now encompasses many other attractions such as the animal corner with various animals, birds and sometimes reptiles, stalls run by local craftspeople, a classic car parade, a brass band and entertainments for children. Refreshments are provided in the Tea Tent and by various stalls. The latest development is the inclusion of several local countryside projects, with demonstrations and activities for visitors to enjoy.
We also have a Raffle, Tombola and Plant Stall, proceeds of which help towards the cost of putting on the show. Plants, vegetables, produce and other donations are always welcome, and we encourage all members to grow and save a few ‘spares’ to help fill up our stalls at the show. Anyone wishing to sponsor a raffle prize or donate gifts or plants should please contact any member of the Committee.
